For years, many people have regularly scanned tech headlines to see what was going on—and coming up—in the industry. It’s probably fair to say that the events of the last two years have only upped the ante when it comes to the public’s interest in technology. With tech now playing an even larger role in how we work, shop, relax and even take care of our health, consumers and businesses alike are even more eager to know what tech trends will be shaping the world in the near future.
From the continuing refinement and leveraging of artificial intelligence to innovations that make even online shopping a “hands-on” experience, technology is poised to continue to change the way we live and work in 2022. Below, 13 industry experts from Forbes Technology Council share their predictions for game-changing technologies that will impact businesses and consumers in the year ahead and beyond.
1. Ethical AI
Ethical artificial intelligence will be one of the technology trends in consumer tech in 2022. While AI technology provides tremendous benefits, it’s facing challenges and posing risks to consumers when it comes to data security and privacy. The industry will continue to discuss and develop ethical principles, guidelines, policies and regulations to ensure AI systems will demonstrate ethical behaviors to protect consumer data and privacy. – Zheng Fan, University of Miami Herbert Business School
2. Continued Growth In AI Usage
In the coming year, we will see the continued expansion of AI into all things customer and consumer. The level of connectivity across networks is becoming more difficult for consumers and businesses to manage. Whether for surveillance, communication, the protection of data or managing other interactions, AI has become the only option for safely managing the complexity of these relationships through 2022 and beyond. – Len Covello, Engage People Inc.
3. Improvements In Battery Life
Battery life is a key area of innovation. Improvements to batteries enable devices to last longer and charge faster, which in turn allows people to be less tethered. Related to improvements in battery efficiency is the rise of more sustainable devices—devices with a longer shelf life in terms of hardware and operating system updates and more recyclable components. Ironically, such devices will market well, but over time they could be counterproductive when it comes to vendor margins. – Murray Foxcroft, ProArch
4. Tech Designed For Remote Work
Covid-19 has pushed consumer tech to pivot to remote- and hybrid-centric models. In 2020 and 2021, we saw people find ways to make tech from 2019 and earlier fit their new needs without heavy expenditures, as tech companies found ways to adapt their products to world events. In 2022, we will start to see improved supply chains and tech that has been specifically designed for the remote/hybrid experience. – Greg Young, Uniform Law Commission
5. Incorporation Of VR And AR In Online Shopping
Virtual and augmented reality technologies are removing the distance between people, information and experiences. For example, Ikea has built an augmented reality app that allows customers to browse the company’s catalog, place 3D renderings of furniture directly in their physical environment and make purchasing decisions by using their very own homes as the backdrop of the catalog. – Ranghan Venkatraman, Rezilyens LLC
6. Remote Try-On Capabilities
The use of augmented reality and virtual try-on technologies in the e-commerce industry is one of the most exciting tech trends that will likely mature and be adopted on a large scale in 2022 and beyond. E-commerce brands’ customers will be able to virtually try on products such as clothing and fashion accessories via mobile and Web apps, which will also feature interactive AR 3D online ads. – Roman Taranov, Ruby Labs
7. Smart Clothing
Soon, the Internet of Things will meet Gucci in the form of smart clothing. For example, swimwear can include UV sensors to prevent overexposure to harmful radiation. Smart footwear may improve your running technique or monitor the mobility of patients with Parkinson’s disease. Manufacturers might embed haptic feedback into textiles to correct your posture or improve your yoga pose. And don’t forget the accessories, such as the Ray-Ban Stories smart sunglasses. – William Diggin, Accenture
8. Social Apps For Brand Engagement
Interactivity will be the trademark of the upcoming year. People need more interaction with things, devices and each other—especially after experiencing social distancing, people wish to gather into communities. It’s the best time for businesses to interact with their customers through social apps with features such as gamification, AI and VR touch; they attract, engage and get people to stick to the brand. – Slava Podmurnyi, Visartech Inc.
9. Even More Smart Gadgets And Experiences
In 2022, we’ll see even more instances of our usual “dumb” gadgets being turned into smart gadgets. Such products might include a toilet seat that monitors blood pressure, heart rate, blood oxygen and so on, or revamped smart glasses that record and play audiovisual content on your command. Additionally, there will be more tech-enhanced experiences, such as smart retail shops where you just pick out your products and go. These are just some of the trends that we already have at least the basic tech for but that aren’t widely popular—yet. 2022 will bring all these to the masses. – Vikram Joshi, pulsd
10. Widespread Adoption Of Low-Code And No-Code Software
We’re going to see greater enterprise adoption of low-code and no-code software to significantly improve the end customer’s experience. With low-code, no-code platforms, companies can innovate faster, validate new ideas and address consumer needs in real time. These platforms will give businesses the speed and agility required to respond quickly to consumers and deliver customized experiences. – Suresh Chintada, Subex
11. Mainstream 5G Usage
5G is going to go mainstream starting in 2022. Compared to 4G, 5G has higher frequency waves and can achieve up to 100 times the speed. Although 5G struggles to go through walls and thick objects, with the correct setup and use of available technology (such as beamforming and so on), its effectiveness in receiving and transmitting data is going to positively affect numerous industries. – Archil Cheishvili, GenesisAI
12. More Efficient And Effective Chatbots
As with every year, new technologies will continue to come online and disrupt our everyday lives. I believe that chatbots will become an increasingly adopted technology trend as we move into 2022. Chatbots are becoming extremely effective in answering customer questions, and with the rise of AI and ML, chatbot technologies are positioned to look fundamentally different leading into 2022. – Marc Fischer, Dogtown Media LLC
13. Passwordless Authentication
More consumers will get rid of passwords for their personal accounts. Hopefully, this will lead to more organizations embracing passwordless authentication for corporate accounts as well. Mobile device authentication with biometric-based access can end the pain of passwords and eliminate the primary point of compromise in phishing attacks. – Jeff Abbott, Ivanti
